GED test in California

The GED® test in California has a minimum age requirement of 18, unless certain additional conditions are met. If you are below the age of 18, you can still qualify under the following circumstances:

1. You are within 60 days of turning 18, regardless of your school enrollment status.
2. You are within 60 days of the anticipated graduation date from high school if you had continued in school following the standard course of study (Note: Candidates meeting this criterion should not be currently enrolled in high school).
3. You are 17 years old, have been out of school for at least 60 consecutive days, and provide a letter of request for the test from the military, a postsecondary educational institution, or a potential employer. This letter must be submitted to a test administrator at a local Pearson VUE test center for review and approval.

For those opting for the Online GED Exam:

• Online GED testing is open to eligible test-takers in California.
• A test-taker under 18, with an approved waiver from the California Department of Education, may be eligible for online testing.
• In cases where the test-taker is under 18, a parent or guardian must be present during pre-test check-in to provide consent and authorize recording during the test. If the parent or guardian is absent, the exam session will be revoked.

What forms of identification are necessary on the day of the GED test?

On the GED test day, you are required to present valid identification. The following types of identification are accepted:

1. Photographic driver’s license with a signature, issued by any US state or foreign government.
2. Photographic identification card with a signature, issued by any of the US Armed Forces, any US state, or any foreign government (*military IDs are not permitted for Online Proctored testing).
3. Photographic Tribal enrollment card with a signature.
4. Photographic identification card or badge with a signature, issued by a California department or agency (e.g., California Conservation Corps).
5. Photographic passport with a signature, issued by the US or a foreign government.

How to Obtain a GED in California

Furthermore, enrollment in high school or similar educational institutions disqualifies you.
